The kingdom of God is like a besieged city surrounded on all sides by death. Each man has his place on the wall to defend, and no one can stand where another stands, but nothing prevents us from calling encouragement to one another.
– Martin Luther
I firmly believe that each of us has a specific mission to fulfill in this life. Whether we are called to lead many or just help a few along the way, each calling is equally important. Don’t feel that any callings that you receive are inconsequential. The work we do here in this life is never inconsequential.
We need to do our best to help those around us. Let us be an example to those we know and those that we do not know. Lift each other up. Christianity is based on the fact that you must help others to help yourself. There is no way to do so otherwise, at least not on a permanent basis. Sometimes the only calling we may have is to call out encouragement to others around us.
This isn’t a calling that is extended by leaders of the church. It is implied in our belief that Jesus Christ is our Savior and our example. Before Alma the Elder baptized those he had taught the gospel to, he shared the traits that true followers of Christ need.
8 And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light;
9 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life—
10 Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?
Let us help one another with the burdens of this life. Whether you are a member of the LDS church or not, we should all be doing this. Religion of all sorts is under an unrelenting attack from all sides. The world is removing itself further and further from the teachings of Jesus Christ. We live in a materialistic world, with everyone focusing on what they can do to better improve their standing in this life. Let us defend the faith that we share in Jesus Christ by upholding each other against these attacks.
