It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.
It is impossible for us to stand still in this world. Either we are moving forward or stalling. Think of it like a plane. If a plane isn’t moving forward fast enough, it stalls and falls out of the sky. We cannot assume that we can stand still in this world that is ever changing. If we are not actively fighting to stay above the now commonplace temptations that are all around us, they will drag us down with them. As multiple apostles have said, testimonies that would have sustained us 20 years ago are not sufficient today. This is why we need to read scriptures and pray daily. It helps us build up our spiritual strength so that we can keep moving forward and not fail. It is also like a river. If we just tread water, we will find ourselves moving downstream with the current. We need to actively swim upstream to stay away from the waterfall that is downstream.
I love the way that C.S. Lewis wrote this. He implies that we will either fly or go bad. We have eternal potential right now. If we do what we can to follow the teachings of Christ, then we will eventually realize that potential. However, if we do not do these things, we lose the opportunity to gain that potential. Our eternal potential has an expiration date, if we do not work to realize it. If we are working, we will realize it, because by working on it, the expiration date is extended. Don’t let your potential go to waste. You cannot know when the expiration date is, so work every day so that you need not worry about it.
