The happiness of life is made up of minute fractions—the little soon-forgotten charities of a kiss, a smile, a kind look, a heartfelt compliment in the disguise of a playful raillery, and the countless other infinitessimals of pleasurable thought and genial feeling.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Happiness is a combination of all the little things that happen every single day in our lives. We choose to be happy – and we do this by focusing on the small things in life, not on the big issues. Of course those big issues need to be addressed and not ignored, but you can really change your outlook on things by focusing on the small joys of every day. We miss so much of the small, tender mercies that God has given us in this life when we focus on the current “big” problems that we are having. most of the time, these problems are small in the grand scheme of things. The good stuff, on the other hand, adds up very quickly if you are looking for it.
Not only should we attempt to focus on the good things in life, but we should try to give others things to focus on. Smile and say hi to someone who is looking down, even if they are a complete stranger. I know from experience that a smile is a force not to be ignored when it comes to lifting someone’s spirits. I’ve had bad days turned completely around because of a simple smile from someone. Little things like that really do make a huge impact on people. Don’t underestimate the power of the little things!
